OUGD504 Module evaluation

Module Evaluation

The purpose of this module was to understand about designing for print, print production, web and screen based media.

One of the main things that I enjoyed doing this module was the Augmented Brief, studio brief 4. After I found that I was quite restricted in studio brief 3 designing my website. One of the limitations I had with the website was that it had to be very minimal and because of the colourful busy vibe that all the covers gave out. I was excited to be a bit more creative with the advert for the website I used layer to create my augmented digital advert. I started by doing some research into augmented design and interactive print. I found both the paper and digital interactive ad’s very interesting, so decided I wanted to make one of each.
I have never done anything like this before, and was worried it would be very difficult and technical. But the website made it really easy and straightforward. How It works is using the layer app on a smartphone when you hover over the image new images appear on your phone it its place of different vogue covers, that you can swipe through to look at. I was pretty impressed with how easy something like this was to make. The whole thing looks very effective and professional, I was definably happy with the final outcome.  This is something I would like to work with again in the future. For my second outcome, with the point of this project to gain the audience's attention, I experimented with creating strange images, made by merging existing vogue covers together in the hope that it would get people interested in what it is. I created 3 leaflets with no writing just a QR code. Again I wanted to gain peoples interest and curiosity; people might just scan the QR code just to see where it takes them. For my third outcome I did interactive print outcome. I wanted to make something physical because people can't resting touching and fiddling with thing. I created this wheel that you spin the layers to create the vogue cover.

The thing that I found hardest thing module was time keeping and organization, and I feel like some out my studio briefs and outcomes aren't as strong as they could be. In particular I am not happy with the look of my website, I think that if I had organized my time more efficiently I could have had more time to develop and improve on it. To work on this timekeeping issue I plan to set aside at least two hours a day everyday, to dedicate to getting work done and catching up with blogging. Also at times when I feel like I have a lot going on with university and my social life I will create a timetable to ensure that my day is been used productively.

A big problem that affected the final visual outcome of my work was that I didn’t leave enough time to book into digital print. In December I attempted to book into digital print for the start of January, just before the module deadline. Usually I like to know what I am printing before I book into digital print However digital print was fully book right up until the deadline date. But from this problem I have learnt how in the future I should book digital print sessions just before any module deadline well in advance incase there is anything I need to print off.

From the studio brief 3 I learnt how there are a lot of considerations you need when designing for the web, such as web safe colours and fonts. One of the most useful things that I have learnt during this brief is creating universal screen designs. Having to design for different sized screens means that you have to put a lot of thought and planning into your designs to keep them universal throughout. With the increasing popularity of the smartphone and tablet, you never know exactly what screen size your website will be viewed on. So designing for different screen sizes means that websites can be shown in its full potential on any device.  Universal design is something that I will now always take into account when I am designing a website in the future.

On a whole I have enjoyed every brief in this module, and have gained a lot of web building skills and look forward to starting the new module.
